Yesterday I received my copy of Rework written by the gents at 37signals. So far the book is fabulous!

Rework is a series of essays, experiences and things learned by Jason and David over the last 10 years that they built 37signals into a very profitable business.

I really like how they opened the book in the second paragraph, “This book isn’t based academic theories. It’s based on our experience. We’ve been in business for ten years. Along the way, we’ve seen two recessions, one burst bubble, business-model shifts, and doom-and-gloom predictions come and go-and we’ve remained profitable through it all.”

The Student’s Manifesto

Dear Professor, as a student, I place my trust in you. I’m trusting you to teach me relevant concepts, tools and ideas that will help me to achieve my future goals and crazy ambitions. I realize I don’t know everything, hence why I’m here at university.

I do have a voice and I will no longer be silent. I deserve to receive a relevant education in every area I study. I’m not just another student in your classroom. I’m a paying customer. I’m a sponge that desires to soak up knowledge and be mentored. I’m not some little pea-brained student looking for a dictator to tell me that I know nothing and I can’t bring my laptop into your class. I’m looking for a mentor. Someone to guide me as I start to develop and refine the skills that will help me make a living in a few short years. To be brutally honest, you are not doing your job, if you are teaching me a textbook that I could read on my own time. At that point you are a facilitator, not a teacher.

You are not doing me any service either, if you haven’t worked professionally in the area you are teaching me. Let’s face it… how can you effectively teach me something that you don’t have experience in? If you don’t have the professional experience, you don’t have much credibility in my book. If you do have the experience, I love to hear your war stories! In fact, that is one of the most fascinating ways for me to learn about the real world. But let’s not forget technology and techniques have changed since the 1970’s, 1980’s, or 1990’s. Please be sure you are teaching me relevant information that will help me get that job once I leave here.

I’m trusting that you know what you are teaching, that you have lived it, you have breathed it, you’ve made a living from doing it, and that you are constantly learning about the new advancements in that area as well. Professor, whether you realize it or not, I’m trusting you with my future. Please teach me what I need to know to get my start once I leave here. I don’t want to be average, I want to stand out and be challenged. Please be my mentor, not my dictator.

This is just my $0.02! While at university I had absolutely amazing professors and some really terrible ones.

The professors that really made an impact on me had these things in common:

• Real life experience
• A mentorship attitude towards their students.
• Taught us relevant information

How would your student manifesto read?

If you get this error and spend hours searching for an answer, its not really out there on Google, StackOverflow, etc…

My word of advice:

1. Save a copy of your project, close your original and work with the copy.
2. Start deleting Movie Clips & Buttons one at a time and then compile until you no longer receive the error.

That was the only freaking way I found an fix for this issue.

Basically, Senator Orrin Hatch (Utah-R) has decided to ask the Obama Administration to review how the BCS Championship is played and to turn it into a playoff system. Sen. Hatch is asking for a anti-trust Review. My two questions to Mr. Hatch are: 1) Why do you think you can use abuse your position of power to change something that you have not power over. 2) Doen’t you have better things to do for the people you serve? Something like help fixing this economy?

TECHNOLOGY

1. Cloud Computing & Virtualization will double in usage by businesses.
2. Mobile & web analytics will play a larger role in business intelligence.
3. Consumer’s consumption of digital media (music, movies, games, etc…) will be at an all-time high. More networks will broadcast TV shows & sports online, in real-time. Netflix will have full online distribution.
4. Traditional media publishing (printed newspapers/magazines) outlets will continue taking several hard losses & 25% will close up shop or go online distribution only.
5. Online education for schools & universities will see a new highs in terms of students, profits & the technology wars will really heat up in this arena.
6. Adobe will establish itself as THE ubiquitous media platform.
7. General consumers realize augmented reality == FAIL. Don’t get me wrong I think AR has a number of applications for the military and other occupations, but I think for the general consumers its fluff.

MOBILE

1. An eBook Reader that does more than just read PDFs for the price of a Cadillac.
2. Multi-touch, personal mobile devices (i.e. iPhone & Droid) will continue to grow & dominate the market.
3. Google will release its GPhone (Android of course).
4. Apple will see a nice growth in sales of iPhone & computers this year & Apple will open its doors to other service providers (about damn time).
5. There will be less concern with desktop operating systems (Mac OS X & Windows 7) and more focus on operating systems that can do that same tasks from the convenience of your hand.

If you are looking to get into ubiquitous rich internet application (RIA) development platform I would seriously advise checking out ActionScript 3.0 & if you know JavaScript or PHP its not a that huge of a jump to get starting in AS3.

Adobe is aiming to push the limits of RIA development by giving developers more robust tools for development. The latest two frameworks would be the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF) and the Text Layout Framework (TLF).

First, TLF is by far my favorite feature of the two. It takes the textual layout capabilities to the new level that international developers really needed, as well as copy and paste functionality from the keyboard.

“The Text Layout Framework is an extensible ActionScript library, built on the new text engine in Adobe® Flash® Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5, which delivers advanced, easy-to-integrate typographic and text layout features for rich, sophisticated and innovative typography on the web. The framework is designed to be used with Adobe Flex® or Adobe Flash Professional and is included in Flex 4, code named “Gumbo”. Developers can use or extend existing components, or use the framework to create their own text components.” – Quoted from the Adobe Open Source TLF Page

Previous I posted, “Apple and AT&T Give Existing iPhone Customers the Finger…, where AT&T and Apple said any previous iPhone owner is getting screwed if they want to upgrade to the new phone.

NOW, current iPhone users (remember I just got my first iPhone 2 months ago) can upgrade to the new iPhone 3Gs at the price of $199 for the 16GB & $299 for the 32GB.

This comes about due to a great number (actually 16,673) of angry Twitter users that signed the Twitition (Twitter + Online Petition app).

What really impressed me was the upcoming release of Snow Leopard. Everything is much more refined and the best part is the $29 it is going to cost me to upgrade. This is the smartest thing Apple could do to separate themselves from Microsoft Windows. Lower price point and better features to upgrade. IMHO this is BRILLIANT! Now onto the iPhone… I was seriously fascinated by all of the new features: ability to interact with 3rd party hardware, tethering, ability to shoot AND edit video, better camera, voice controls, cut and paste, etc…

What really pissed me off is their stupid upgrade policy! My two year contract with Verizon Wireless was ending on June 1. I still wanted to keep the same mobile number that I’ve had for seven or eight years, but I wanted to get away from my crappie local Verizon Wireless service and I’ve been drooling over an iPhone. So I went to my local AT&T store and they told me I should buy my iPhone now. I was a bit hesitant because I had heard all of the rumors about a new potential iPhone being released. So I asked the AT&T sales representative and she told me that Apple wasn’t releasing another iPhone, just the software. So me, listening to AT&T’s stupid sales representative (who’s biz card I still have), I went ahead and got my iPhone that week.

My, oh my, was I concerned when I found out that Apple was releasing the iPhone 3Gs, then in the keynote address they mentioned we could upgrade starting at $199. I was thinking this is a great price, just like the new version of Mac OS X… man Apple is really doing it the right way to make all of their existing customers really happy. I thought I would add another line to my AT&T plan, give my iPhone 3G to my finacee and I’ll get the new iPhone 3Gs. But NOOOOO…. what they failed to mention in the keynote was this great pricing is only for qualifying customers (new and 2 year customers).

Apple & AT&T… WTF were you thinking? Do you know that you just missed a huge opportunity to really drive revenue and customer loyalty? If you would have allowed all of your existing customers to upgrade starting at $199 price (in exchange for renew their 2 year contracts or even add an additional year), you could have made serious profits and made your exist customers extremely happy. But you missed your golden opportunity and in turn pissed off a ton of your existing customer base. Thanks Apple and AT&T for giving us the bird…

I then remember I’ve been wanting to play around with 2D barcode readers. So I did some research and settled on ScanLife. I created an account, created a 2D barcode for my buddy’s website (Andy Sowards) and then downloaded the iPhone app. Real simple to use and it worked on the first try. Definitely a pretty nifty app and it can be used in some many various type of application.

First, Adobe has decided on renaming Flex Builder to Flash Builder! I know when I first heard this I was thinking WTF?This completely screws up everything… especially talking about Flash verse Flex.  For everyone who has a complaint about the changes, Lee Brimelow has several answers to these questions on his blog. There is a lot more great feedback from the Flex community down in the comments section of the post.

Next, Adobe has a tentative schedule for the Flex 4 / ColdFusion 9 world tour dates starting June 1! Visit Ted Patrick’s blog to view the lengthy list.

If you are at the point of debating to close your newspaper doors OR if you are looking to start your own local, niche news source this post is your guide to getting started creating you own digital newspaper for a fraction of the cost.

THE PROBLEMS

• Most people don’t want to pay for news since it is freely available online.
• The Gen Y’ers don’t subscribe or read a printed news for the most part.
• Traditional newspapers are not interactive.

THE SOLUTION

So I want to show you a few tools on how to create your own cost effective, interactive, digital newspaper. There are 6 (with an optional 7th) basic items you need: Brand Identity, Domain Name, Website Hosting, Framework, Publishing Tools, Marketing/Promotional Tools & an option Web Geek on the side.

1. Brand Identity – If you don’t have a registered business name, logo and tag line you need to pick one and files the appropriate government entities. As far as the logo and tag line normally you can come up with these on your own or if you want a bunch of creative idea you post a contest on 99Designs.com (This will cost you between $250-400 for a fabulous brand which is cheap in comparison to the next option).  Or if desired and you want to spend a large amount of money you can hire a designer or firm to create a brand. This is usually the most expensive solution.
2. Domain Name – Next, you need a domain name that is concise, easy to remember and matches your Brand Identity. I would recommend GoDaddy for purchasing and managing your domain names. These will normally run you $15 per year for an average domain.
3. Website Hosting -  I would recommend using MediaTemple. They are only $20 per month and usually pretty reliable.
4. Framework - I would strongly using WordPress! I’ve used Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, etc… but at this current time WordPress is easier for the average person to use, it has a larger development community, you get better search engine visibility (SEO) & it is much easier to customize… oh, and lets not forget its FREE! Once you have a framework installed you need a theme to make it look spiffy. There are thousands of WordPress themes available for commercial use… just Google it or click here.
5. Advertising/Monetization - If you have a popular or niche audience you may be able to get away with charging a monthly subscription fee, but in most cases the way you are going to make your money is through advertisements. Just like newspapers have done for years, but you don’t need to hire a sales person. If using WordPress you can automate the process by using a WordPress Plugin. Click here to see the pros/cons of several popular WordPress Ad Management Plugins. If you prefer not to fool with doing this yourself there is always Google AdSense, but you probably won’t make quite as much doing that, but its certainly is convenient.
6. Publishing Tools – If you are looking to just publish text and pictures the WordPress framework can easily meet those needs. If you are looking for a fantastic way to manage your image collection & controlling the licensing your photos I would advise  using Flickr Pro and its only $25. If you are looking for a better approach to telling the story I would recommend using Soundslides Plus. This tool will only cost you $70 one time and you own it. With it you can take your images and organize them as you please, then you integrate an audio file to create a powerful news or storytelling presentation. Finally, I would recommend using Vimeo Plus for any video streaming needs you may have.
7. Marketing/Promotion Tools – You need to install Google Analytics or some other form of tracking visitors on your site so you know how to improve it. I would strongly suggest tying your site into a few social media avenues such as: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc… I would recommend setting up your WordPress RSS Feed through FeedBurner. There are many more, so you will have to evaluate what will work best for you site.
8. Web Geek (Optional) - I will be releasing a series of video tutorial on how to create your own online news system in the near future. If you start a project and hit a dead end OR if you want to hire me to setup your site I’d be more than happy to help.

As a ballpark estimate (basic package) if you were to create an online, interactive newspaper it would roughly cost you $255 per year to maintain. For a full package (basic package + Flickr + Vimeo + Soundslides) it would cost you $420 for the first year and then $350 for every year after that.  Not too shabby compared to the cost of starting a traditional newspaper. Actually those numbers are VERY impressive!

I’ve seen some feeling down, discouraged, pessimistic, angry and overall hopeless about life, their job, the future, etc…

Who or what is responsible for this? It seems to be tied to the economy in some way. So I propose the question to you, what started it? Is it the economy causing everyone to feel gloomy OR is it the people were unsatisified with their status quo and they caused the economy to take a down-turn?

I feel it is the latter. You may ask how could the people be responsible? Simple, short answer… BAD CREDIT! 2nd mortgages, more credit cards, etc… all just to make their world seem better because of more stuff.

Ultimately, stuff cant bring happiness! It can bring some entertainment, but not true happiness! Invest your time in colleagues, friends, religion, community, etc… and most importantly family!

I have learned more about business and technology in the last 14 months than I ever did in college. With TRImagination we have dedicated that last year plus, to R&D, not we have schematics, a solid business model and we are just missing that one key ingredient… FUNDING! Yeah I know, it is almost an oxymoron with the state of our economy!

For those who don’t know what TRImagination is, it is a technology, educational startups focused on building a better digital textbook. Yeah that is a vague description… if you want to know more.. email me.

Initially we were seeking $250-350k to get this running, then the economy tanked and we’ve had to revise our plan. Now we are seeking a small investment amount (preferably from an angel investor) to cover the cost of developing enterprise-scalable technology. We already have a developer on stand-by just need a small round funding.

If you know of anyone that has a passion for educational technology and really wants to make a difference send them our way.

I received a copy of the app to install on my iPod Touch (before it was stolen… some bastard) to evaluate.

So I installed the app and synced it with my Basecamp account and started to play with it. My first impression on this new project management app for my Touch was WOW! The Morfunk Team really did put a lot of time in effort the user experience and the layout was amazing.

Outpost Pros:

• Clean interface
• Very logical layout
• Fabulous user experience
• GREAT price!

Outpost Cons:

• Kind of slow Sync initially, but this is a 37signals issue NOT an Outpost issue.

Overall, I think Outpost provides a much better and usable product than their competitor: AppRemix Projects. Outpost provides a great PM application to manage your Basecamp projects on the go when you are not able to manage them from your computer.
