“What If’s…”: …there were NO more Printed Newspapers, Magazines, etc..?

12.08.2008 1

Print journalism has been one of the largest dying industries for years now! There are reports that state that Journalism Degrees are in serious decline. Newspaper, magazines, book publishers, etc… have cut number of staff, publications and budgets dramatically. Many have even closed their doors within the last 36 months for a multitude of reasons including:

  • They can’t deliver printed content in a timely fashion. Due to the rising number bloggers, news channels that have gone online and social media site.
  • People do not want to pay for their news when it is freely available online and on-demand.
  • The overhead (resources, payroll and materials) to print content costs at least 50% (if not more) than a digital publication.
So I propose “What If” this time next year no traditional newspapers, magazine and book publishers exist, but rather all of your news, information and entertainment came directly to your email or mobile device? How would that change your life? Would it be better? Would it be worse?
Digital technologies such as blogs, website, content management systems, RSS feeds, etc… have given the information publishing businesses an incredible edge that is not only greener, but less time consuming and better Return-On-Investment (ROI).
